The Portsmouth Outdoor Pool out at Peirce Island is a true hidden fitness gem on the Seacoast of NH. For summer pool workouts or just a quick dip to cool off, I am lovin’ this pool during summer! What a treat and treasure for Seacoast residents, fitness enthusiasts and summer visitors alike. If you need to get in a pool workout, go for a quick swim or just want to cool off from the hot and humid summer on the Seacoast, you’ll love the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool.
Originally built in 1937 and fully refurbished in 2003, the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool is open from 11 a.m. – 5:15 p.m. for open swim, with select night hours on Tuesday & Wednesday. The pool is run by the Portsmouth Recreation Department and is open 7 days a week. Weekday mornings are reserved for children’s swimming lessons. The pool measures 100 yards long and 33 yards wide and slopes from 18 inches to six feet, so it’s great for families and kids of all ages. The pool features six (wide) lap lanes at the deep end that are available during every open swim.
Take it from me… in the summer on the Seacoast, the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool rules! I have seen a lot of outdoor pools in my day all over the country. I can honestly say this is one of the nicest outdoor rec pools around. And it is very, VERY clean and well run, and the lifeguard staff is great too! (Last summer one of the lifeguards gave me some great swimming form and breathing tips – they worked!)
This pool is also where I, and many other Seacoast triathletes and swimmers go to train during the summer months. I run into many local swimmers who just ride their bike or run out to Peirce Island and get a quick swim workout in at lunch or after work as part of their summer fitness training. It’s such a fitness treat to have right here in downtown Portsmouth. You have to love this pool even more since it is located out on picturesque Peirce Island and has sweeping views of Portsmouth Harbor and the Navy Yard right from the pool deck. What could be better? Some Seacoast scenery and swimming. Love it.
AND another big reason to love the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool in summer? Daily admission is only $2 for adults and kids swim FREE – for Portsmouth Residents – while Non-Residents are asked to pay $4/$2 respectively. What a summer fitness bargain for fitness enthusiasts, swimmers and families alike!
Check it out for yourself! Here’s the Outdoor Pool Schedule. Although sadly, my Seacoast summer lovin’ with the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool will end soon as the pool closes on Sunday, August 26th. Love can be fleeting after all. But, there is still time left to show the Outdoor Pool some lovin’, get in a pool workout or just go in for a quick dip as the Seacoast summer days are a-driftin away… Dive (wade) on in to the Portsmouth Outdoor Pool. It’s summertime on the Seacoast and the water’s great.
[Tell me more, tell me more…. No need to cry-eeee-y-eee-o Seacoast swimmers and fitness enthusiasts, the City of Portsmouth also has a wonderful Indoor Pool & Aquatic Fitness Center located opposite Portsmouth High School, over on Andrew Jarvis Drive. It is a 25 meter 6-lane aquatic facility, also recently renovated, with a hot tub, a handicapped ramp and some basic stretching and exercise equipment. The Indoor Pool’s water temperature is kept between 81 an 82 degrees year-round (for those winter warm-up workouts). And, just in time for the fall fitness season, the Recreation Department will hold the much-anticipated Indoor Pool Grand Re-opening (and Fitness Fair) on September 9th! Gotta love swimming on the Seacoast. Save me a lane would ya?]
